MacBeth Play

I'm not really the kind of person to watch plays, I'm much more of a musical kind of person. However, the Macbeth play was somewhat interesting. It was very confusing but it was definitely different then what I expected it to be. I thought they would stay true to the original play with a couple minor adjustments or differences. But I think it strayed from the original play. It was a bit confusing because most of the characters were played by females/women even if the character was a man they would have a female play the part of a male. It was also confusing because there were no costumes and many of the actors were playing multiple characters but you couldn't tell when they were playing a different character because there were no costumes and everyone just wore black. The lack of props and costumes made it difficult to understand. However, the most confusing part was the dialect. They used old English which is hard to read and understand but even harder to watch and understand. It was very difficult to understand what they were saying and to keep up with what was going on in the play. The most controversial part in the play, among my fellow FSSP members, was the kiss. Everyone in FSSP thought the kiss was strange, to say the least, because an older professor kissed a student. That was what most students talked about from the play. Overall, the play was somewhat interesting but defiantly confusing.

Guest Speaker Week 5/ Studying Abroad

This week our guest speaker was Irwin Apple. He was talking to us about acting and singing stuff like that. To be honest I found his lecture on the boring side, he told us a lot of stories about his life and how he went to school in New York and how much he loves New York stuff like that. However, this week for discussion we went to the EAP office, which is Education Abroad Program. We learned about the different opportunities UCSB offers to study abroad. We also learned that the program has requirements such as G.P.A and status of the student's year (sophomore, junior, etc.) I am very eager about studying abroad in India. So when I learned about the different abroad programs offered for juniors and seniors in India I was very excited. There were two in particular that caught my attention, the seven week summer program in india and the fall four month program. I really want to go to India but I have to wait until my junior or senior year. I found out that most abroad programs are for juniors and seniors but there are a couple programs offered to sophomores. I found out that next summer of 2014 I would be able to study abroad in France, Italy, and even the U.K. I have never been out of the country so I am looking forward to next summer going to study abroad. I don't know where yet because I'm debating between a couple places but I definitely want to study abroad.

Events for FSSP

Three of the four events I attended for FSSP were: The international dessert night, the felid trip to the co-op, and I visited the EOP office twice. My favorite event was visiting the EOP office because they were able to really help me with some information. I came in as an undeclared major because I was debating between psychology and biology but I finally decided that I wanted to major in biology so I had to change/declare my major. I went to the EOP office and they told me the steps I need to take to change my major which I took and now I'm a bio major! They were super friendly and super helpful. The dessert night was cool but the food wasn't all that international, it was like store bought. It was good but it wasn't authentic. However, I can't complain it was free dessert. The co-op trip was cool because I had never been to a co-op. The co-op inspired me to try Almond milk. The lady that was speaking to us was super chill. She was really friendly and laid back, she was also a UCSB alumni. I thought it was interesting that the co-op was created by students and is for students. These last six weeks at FSSP have been a really good experience from the classes, to my roommates, to the activities, it was a very fun six weeks. I would definitely recommend incoming freshmen to do FSSP.

Dr.Lubach/ Library

This week's lecture was my favorite so far. Dr. Lubach's presentation was entertaining. He was goofy which made him funny. What really stood out to me was his sense of humor, he knows that lectures can be really boring for us so he used his humor to get our attention, which is something a lot of professors don't do. His advice was inspirational and useful. I found it really interesting when he said that UCSB should be “the face of California”, meaning that there should be more diversity. I agree, UCSB is already a mini melting pot but it would help open our minds to other people if there were to be more diversity. He gave us a variety of advice from the IV party scene to academics at UCSB. He said that we should take big risks and don’t always think about your career. However, at the same play it safe when it comes to your wellbeing and think about the future but don’t pressure yourself. The library visit was very helpful for future references. I learned where I need to go and what I need to do for classes that involve research. Now I know that the library is a crucial part of research projects, essays, and projects. It was helpful having someone show you step by step what you need to do to find books, articles, and other resources before I didn’t know how to do this. Before, I didn’t know that the computers look up whatever you need to fin for you and now I know how to use the computer for help.

Plagiarism

The online articles about plagiarism were very interesting and very enlightening and also very long. Before I read the articles I thought that plagiarism was just copy something exactly from the internet or from someone else’s work and putting it in your essay, project, or work. I thought plagiarism was just copying and not citing where it came from, just claiming that you were the author, creator, or inventor of something. However, the articles enlightened me in detail about plagiarism really is. I learned that you can cite authors but if your paper is filled with citations then your not being original. When you paraphrase you are still using someone else’s idea but you are rewording it so you must cite it because it’s not your idea it’s just your words. I thought this was interesting because I didn’t realize that you’re supposed to cite something you paraphrase. When you get information from the internet do not copy and paste. But if you chose to cute and paste be sure to cite properly. It’s better to be honest and get a lower grade then to plagiarize and risk horrible consequences. Always be sure to put quotes because if you forget this little thing, it could lead to plagiarism. If you get a significant amount of help from others give them some credit. Even if you don’t mean to do it or you didn’t realize that you have plagiarized you are still held fully responsible. Now I know how serious it is to plagiarize and what it is.

Career Counseling

I thought the librarian’s lecture was helpful because she told us how the library can help us in the future when it comes to doing research for essays, projects, and classes. However, I found the career counseling much more helpful. The career counseling building helps students look for internships, jobs on, and off campus. It help students with interview tips and resume editing. In the career center building they had a flyers about different majors and what possible jobs you can get from those majors. I found a flyer about what how to become a physician’s assistant which is what I hope to do. The flyer was very helpful because I learned that before grad school you have to do 1,000 hours clinical hours. Before, I thought I could go to grad school right after I was done with undergrad school but you have to 1,000 hours before grad school. So this was very important information I learned. I also learned that to satisfy the requirement you can do work through the peace corps. So now my plans have changes a bit with the new information I have learned from the career counseling building. I also learned that one or two years of residency program is required before I will be able to practice as a physician assistant. In the flyer I also learned the variety of undergrad majors that I could major in to become a P.A. Before I thought you could only major in Biology or Biochem or Chem to become a P.A. But I could major in Physiology or Anatomy to become a P.A. So now I’m considering changing my major from Bio to Anatomy but I’m not sure yet.

Blog 2

On Saturday morning, when we went to visit the Student Resource Center, I discovered a couple things I didn't know before. I had been to the Student Resource Center only once before and it was at orientation. Unlike, on Saturday, the first time I was at the Student Resource Center I was there briefly and I did not explore. However, on Saturday I discovered that there is a Women’s Center that focuses on the needs of women. In this center, they also offer a private library for women to study, which I think is pretty cool! They also offer a massage chair that is for everyone! I was really interested in the Chicano/ Latino resource center. I found favor in this center because I am of Latina decent so it's always interesting to learn about your culture. Inside there was poetry, books, and posters about Hispanic culture. They also had African American, Asian American, and Middle Eastern resource centers. Because I had class and my professor did not allow me to go the Majors/ Minors fair. However, from what I heard the fair was interesting. In college I think it is very important to use your resources. You’re paying for everything at the school so take advantage! I think the best way to meet people is to be outgoing! If you want to not only meet people but want them to remember who you are be outgoing and stand out! Everyone feels the same way you do, we’re all first years! So don’t be shy or close minded!
